BIZERTE AND ITS WONDERS
BIZERTE HISTORY
Bizerte, the antique Hippo Zaritus, is located in the northern point of Tunisia and has an important historical background. The central location as a crossroad between eastern and western Mediterranean sea has given Bizerte a privileged marina position since antique times.
The Phoenicians had taken advantage of the city strategic assets and founded Bizerte as a trading post, around the 12th century B.C, after being a stopper. This strategic location has led to the successive occupation of Bizerte by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Spanish, Turks and French.
BIZERTE TOURISM
Bizerte has an important architectural heritage enriched through 3000 years of history. The imposing Spanish fortress protects the medina and its charming antique port. The panoramic coffee shops terraces perched on top of its thick walls offer a wonderful view on the city.
The lake of Bizerte, 60km sqm, connected to the sea, is perfectly navigable and belongs to the Ichkeul National Park, listed at the UNESCO World Heritage since 1980. The Park is an important stop-over for migratory birds coming from the northern part of Europe and is an ideal location for bird-watching.
▪ Ichkeul National Park is a freshwater lake and marshland which is the last remaining in a chain that once crossed North Africa. The Park is significantly important to migrating birds such as ducks, geese and pink flamingos.
▪ Spanish Fort is located at the top of the hill of the town. Just a short walk north up from the west wall of the Kasba, and follow the wall. See some nice old stonework, antique cannons and enjoy sweeping views of Bizerte at this historic fort.
▪ Kasba is located at the North of the harbour. Wander around and through the Kasba, or old Arab quarter, to get a feel of the past time. With its imposing walls offering a decidedly military appearance and the inside space is remarkably quiet.
